If you have decided to add wineglasses to your list of gifts when you register for your upcoming wedding, you need to first have a good idea of the types of glasses you want. While this may not seem like a big deal to some people, if you entertain often, then you do not want to offer wine to your guests with mismatched glasses. Instead, you want to be able to set beautiful glasses in front of everyone.
For starters, top quality crystal is always an excellent choice but while these wineglasses look rich and elegant, they may not help with the taste of the wine. Let me explain. The tongue is covered with taste buds, all broken into four areas that include saltiness, bitterness, sweetness, and acidity.
The saltiness is located on the far sides, the bitterness on the back of the tongue, the sweet on the tip, and the acid in the inside middle. Now, if you drink wine out of a glass that has a straight side, what happens is the wine is directed toward the bitter and acid areas, which gives the wine a bad taste. Therefore, the structure of the glass is actually more important than the appearance.
If your plan for putting wineglasses on your wedding registry is to build a nice collection, then the goal should be to choose glasses that are shaped much like an egg standing up, with approximately one-third cut from the top. In addition, be sure the glass has a long stem to prevent the wine from becoming too warm from the hand being too close to the bottom of the glass.
Depending on the type of wine you drink, you would choose a little bit different glass. For example, if you prefer to drink red wine, then the wine glass would be a little larger, usually holding 12 ounces. However, if you like white wine, the glass would be smaller, generally holding up to 9 ounces.
Now, in addition to the shape and size, you can also choose a specialty wineglass, which would include oversized glasses and rounded balloon glasses. The oversized wineglass is excellent for aged wine in that it provides the opportunity for the wine to breathe. Then for the rounded glass, it works better for Chardonnays.
Again, crystal is always a top choice for wineglasses in that this material is stunning. In addition, you might consider a machine-blown glass, which is elegant and beautiful, or a hand-blown glass, which is very sophisticated but also very expensive. Remember, the less expensive wineglasses will not help with the taste of the wine so while you do not have to register the most expensive wineglasses, you do want to register quality and structure.
